HOTEL ATLAS: COLLECTED STORIES AND FRAGMENTS

JANUARY 23TH – MAY 14TH, 2023

Hotel Atlas: Collected Stories and Fragments is a multi-video installation. It combines still and moving images, as well as objects that I have collected over a period of many years from discarded encyclopedias, instruction manuals, beauty guides and digital archives. These materials have been arranged and reconfigured, proposing connections between seemingly unrelated elements from the gestures of screen stars to taxonomies of natural history to writers working at the borders of speech. These configurations ask for constant re-evaluation while creating a universe guided by its own logic.

Hotel Atlas was part of SIGHTINGS’ 2022-2024 programming cycle focusing on the theme SEE FEVER, which examines the viewing subject’s perceptual and psychic experience when presented with a wide-angle view, the search for the panoramic view and the horizon, as well as the apparatuses that augment, enhance, and disorient vision’s spatial logic. Developed by Julia Eilers Smith.

A Live Reading Performance took place on April 4, 2023 as part of this project. More information here.

Thank you to Julia Eilers Smith, Michèle Thériault, Samuel Garrigo Meza, Christine Boudreau, Brigitte Comeau, Material for the Arts NYC, and the librarians and supporters of The New York Public Library Picture Collection. Documentation by Jean-Michael Seminaro (above)
